How I built it
A quiz night game
A TV-style quiz show played on phones and tablets over the local Wi-Fi, with buzzers, rounds and live scores. No internet or app store needed.

The problem
A proper TV-style quiz night at home, on the phones and tablets already in the house. No app store, no internet during play, and no cost.
What I built
A quiz game run from a laptop over the home Wi-Fi. Players join from their own phone or tablet, the host runs it from a tablet with the answers, and every screen shows the question and the buzzers at the same moment.
How it works
- 1
Scan to join
The laptop shows a big QR code. Up to four players scan it, type a name and pick a seat colour. No app to install.
- 2
A buzzer that's actually fair
Each tablet keeps checking how far its clock is from the laptop's and times a press the moment a finger lands, so the quickest player wins, not the one with the best Wi-Fi. Presses within 20 thousandths of a second are a dead heat.
- 3
The host keeps control
A PIN-protected host screen shows the answers, with big Right, Wrong and Undo buttons and the scores.
- 4
Nothing gets lost
The game is saved after every move. A tablet that sleeps rejoins in the same seat, and even a laptop restart carries on from the same question.
What it uses
- Node.js
- Socket.IO
- Phone and tablet web apps
- Automated rehearsals with Playwright
What something like this could do for your business
Interactive quizzes for events, training days or a pub quiz night, played on people's own phones with nothing to download.
